Flying in to Seattle

You'll want to fly in and out of the Seattle/Tacoma airport, located about 20 miles south of Seattle. The major airlines at SeaTac are: American Airlines, United, Continental, Northwest, US Airways, Delta, and TWA. Regional airlines include: America West, Alaska/Horizon Air, Southwest Airlines, and Frontier Airlines. One place to go to compare fares is Microsoft Expedia, but there are plenty others.

For timing purposes, we recommend that you fly in to Seattle no later than Friday, June 28th.  Ferry traffic can get very busy on Friday afternoons so the best times for catching the ferry is on Friday or Saturday morning or late on Friday night.

Flying home from Seattle

For your return trip from Seattle, we recommend that you either fly out on Monday or late on Sunday.  Traveling from Port Townsend to Seattle generally takes 2 hours and may take longer if you don't hit the ferry at the right time.  If you are planning on staying in Port Townsend on Saturday night,  you may want to consider relaxing on Sunday morning in Port Townsend and enjoying the breakfast portion of the B&B.  Given the extra security requirements at the airports, you will want to give yourself plenty of time 2-3 hours from the time you leave Port Townsend until you arrive at SEATAC airport.  With a late Sunday afternoon or early evening flight, you will have time to relax in PT and get to the airport with time to spare.

Getting to Seattle from the Airport

If you are coming early and are staying in Seattle, you can either rent yourself a car (all the major rental companies are at the airport) or catch some kind of shuttle/bus to your Seattle hotel. Shuttle Express runs large passenger vans and require an advance reservation if you don't wish to wait when you get here. The Gray Line of Seattle runs buses on a regular schedule to and from the airport and downtown Seattle. And, finally, Seattle Metro buses also run on a regular schedule between the airport and downtown.

Getting around Seattle

If you are staying in downtown, most everything there is accessible by walking or by Metro bus (there's a free zone that covers most of downtown). Parking can be expensive and tricky to find. Also, if you end up staying by the Seattle Center, there is a monorail that runs from the Seattle Center to the Westlake Center in the heart of downtown, which is extremely convenient.

There are a lot of places to go outside of Seattle as well (Mount Rainier, the Olympic Peninsula, etc) that definitely require a car, so if you're going to be here for a while, we encourage you not to limit yourself to downtown!

Getting to Port Townsend from Seattle or the Airport

From the airport: You most likely will need to rent a car if you are going straight from the airport to Port Townsend. You can check with the shuttle companies, but we don't believe any run that far north.

From Seattle: You will also most likely need to rent a car, and if you don't already have one by this point, there are several rental companies in downtown Seattle. Additionally, there will probably be many of our Seattle friends going up at the same time, so we can probably arrange someone to carpool up with if you don't want to get a car. Follow the directions from Seattle to Port Townsend.

Riding the Ferries

Riding the ferries is fun, but there are a few pointers that we thought we'd share for the out-of-towners. Here are some tips and tricks to make the ride more pleasant:

  • Schedules.  The ferry schedules are all posted up on the Washington State Ferry websiteThe most likely ferry for traveling to Port Townsend is the Seattle to Bainbridge Island route.
  • Lining up. It is very likely there will be some kind of line for the ferry going to and from Bainbridge Island. On both the island and the mainland, there will be a lane on the right side of the road designated as the "ferry holding lane." If you see people lined up or parked in the lane, get in behind them. Depending on the wait (can be up to 1-2 hours), you may be a ways away, so it may seem like you'll never get there!  Whatever you do, do not cut in line. They are liable to let you get all the way to the front of the line, then send you back to the end!
  • Paying. Going to Bainbridge, you have to pay for passengers and the car & driver. On the way back, you only have to pay for the car & driver. The fares are posted on the WS Ferry website, including the Seattle-Bainbridge fares.

Sailing and Boating

For you lucky souls with boats, the Port Hudson Resort and Marina is conveniently located to the reception and the church.  The Marina's number is 1.800.228.2803 and is located at the north end of Water Street at Port Hudson near Admiralty Inlet.  Check out their website for more information.
